Thinking Activity:- Identify the 'Modernist',' Symbols', 'Imagery' and ' Metaphors'... from the poems.
Here given task by Dilip Barad sir.
Everyone welcome to my blog, here I am going to sahre my view upon given task. This task was about modernism and modernist poem. We have to find modernist symbol, metaphor and imagery from the very short poem. Before starting let's know that what is modernism?
About Modernism :-
Modernism is both a philosophical movement and an art movement that, along with cultural trends and changes, arose from wide-scale and far-reaching transformations in Western society during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Among the factors that shaped modernism were the development of modern industrial societies and the rapid growth of cities, followed then by reactions of horror to World War I. Modernism also rejected the certainty of Enlightenment thinking, and many modernists rejected religious belief.

Today I want to share about The Modern literature and modern poems. So let's start with few information about it...
● Modernism:
Modernism according to me; Modern Age is the age of transformed and it's all about private and social life. The change from the old to the new; like narrowness and spiritual ideas to universal and open-minded way. From blind faith to rational thinking is very interestingly I find in this age. The modern era means new values, new ideas, new life - style, mee rules and Western influence. The literature of the New Age is the literature of challenge and of the reconstruction of new world. Because, after world war one (1914 - 1918) and world war two (1939 - 1945) is very important for this changes and new Values.
)" Image " by Edward Storer:-
Edward Storer was clearly influenced by Japanese form such as the haiku, This poem has completed into only 3 Lines also.According to my point of view in the short poem seems like as an image. We can't bind in one certain idea about any Image. but here may be the Image of Sorrowful condition and everything looks like varnished. I can imagine that situation is became like as land of desert with full moon light. There are somebody on pyre and due to the lake of love and everyone certainly has payed the price.
* Moon :- As a land of Desert with full moon
* Pyre :- Bad happening, Death, Drought,Loneliness
4) " In a station of the Metro":-
Pound arrived at this two lines poem after writing a much longer draft which he then cut down, line by line. The poem describes the sight of the crowd of commuters at the Paris Metro Station. In the poem using vivid and original image. So that this poem also based on imagination As the title suggested the image of Metro-station. There are crowded people and everyone rushing. This poem has completed in only 2 lines. In the poem Faces are compared with the petal of the black and wet bough. It means that after the rain when branches becomes black. Here I found some point like as,
* Apparition :- Ghost, Imagery
* Petals :- Flowers, Faces
* Black and Wet Bough :- After the rain
◆ General Characteristics of the Modern Age:-
●Anxiety and Interrogation,
●Art for Life's sake,
●Growing Interest in the poor and the working classes,
●Impact of socio- economic conditions on literature,
●Psychology and Literature,
●The Impact of the Two world wars,
●International character of Literature,
●The Influence of Radio, Cinema & Television. This are the characteristics of modern era.
Modernist poems; 1) The Embankment
The poem is may be about one man who is capitulate person. And he wants to peace and something powerful; because, man is addicted to something. Man or particular person who talk with god and say something. Here I find two words like, Old star and blanket; this two words are shown falling and bad things. When old star shows us falling down and Blanket is symbool of darkness. And people always try for existence.
Key words like, Gold heels, 'I', sky, blanket, god, so, this are the key words in this poem.
2) Darkness by Joseph Campbell
It's four /4 lines Irish poem. Title itself is one of the best point to understand the poem. Darkness means the bad part of something and it's not good for human beings. So here something is 'lost' and than rise of new way of life. So, here I find existence and existentialism. So, it's deep & meaningful but, easily understand with simple language.
Key words; Darkness, soul, lost, need
